Great Holiday Reads – Nine Dragons by Michael Connelly
For all the Michael Connelly fans, this latest book sees the return of the very familiar figure of detective Harry Bosch. Harry is an LA Detective that is a little rough around the edges and is relentless in his pursuit of criminals.
In this latest instalment, Bosch investigates a murder of a store owner in a tough neighbourhood of LA. He has extra motivation on this occasion because he knows the victim as he once helped Harry out in a time of need. The investigation takes Harry in to the seedy underworld of Chinese Triad gangs in LA and a chase to catch the suspect before he flees to Hong Kong. The story takes a major twist when Harry’s daughter, who lives with his estranged wife in Hong Kong goes missing and a devastating message arrives on his mobile. Harry heads to Hong Kong as the action picks up even more pace and his rampage around Hong Kong is almost Jack Reacher’esque
The story continues to twist and turn to the thrilling climax. A thoroughly enjoyable read and a perfect holiday page turner. In fact I read this in 7 days when I was supposed to be working – just didn’t want to put it down!

Great Holiday Reads – The Final Reckoning by Sam Bourne
Described by the Daily Express as ‘compulsive reading’ and as ‘gripping’ by the Guardian, this Sam Bourne novel had a lot to live up to before I had even started reading. However it doesn’t fail to deliver in another fast paced book full of intrigue, twists and turns, mixing real events in to a great story line.
Set in the modern day Tome Byrne, a former idealist United Nations lawyer, is asked to help out the UN in placating the family of a harmless old man accidentally shot by security staff. However, there is more to this old man than you would expect including membership of a secret brotherhood responsible for unexplained deaths across the World. As Tom tries to get to unlock the secrets he is pursued by those prepared to kill to keep the secrets safe.
This was an enjoyable read mixed with sadness over the real World War II events that underpinned the story.

Great Holiday Reads – The Difficult Second Book by Chris Moyles
If you are looking for some light relief on your holiday then this may be the perfect travel companion.
Chris Moyles is the self proclaimed saviour of Radio One and millions of us wake up every day to listen to his banter with the team. This is not a new book and not even his first but it is still a fun insight in to what it is to be a celebrity in the UK. It also gives you a glimpse of the double life Mr Moyles leads… one minute radio and TV funny man, the next someone who would rather be at home on his couch with the Xbox…. but he doesn’t want the pizza delivery firm to know he is at home alone!
It is fun, light hearted and, if you are a fan like us, like him even more. As he points out at the beginning this is the perfect book for a flight, we would recommend it as a pleasant change from the holiday novels.
